The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) has recognized Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government by bestowing the “Champion of the Earth” award for taking leadership in promotion of solar energy through the International Solar Alliance. Further, UNEP has awarded Cochin International Airport for becoming the first airport in the world to run its entire operations on solar energy.

The awards will be given during the inaugural General Assembly of the International Solar Alliance, taking place on 2 October 2018. Concurrently, the 2nd Global RE-Invest India-ISA Partnership Renewable Energy Investors Meet & Expo is set to be held from 3-5 October 2018 at the India Expo Mart, Greater Noida. Initiated by India and France, the International Solar Alliance aims to bring together all countries that lie in the equatorial region to cooperate on solar energy.

In a major push to the International Solar Alliance, European Investment Bank President Werner Hoyer recently announced a bridge urban financing gap with Global Urbis, launch the Land Degradation Neutrality Fund and expand solar energy funding. The alliance aims to raise $1 trillion by 2030 from public and private investors to invest in solar projects across the globe.

Meanwhile, Cochin International Airport has also been recognised for becoming the first airport in the world to run its entire operations on solar energy. It is the world’s first solar powered airport and its operations are entirely powered by solar energy.
