The government of Jammu & Kashmir (J&K) has installed 91,000 solar home lighting devices for households residing in remote unelectrified Kashmir villages. Sajad Gani, the State Minister of Social Welfare said this arrangement has been done under the Ministry of New & Renewable Energy’s Remote Village Electrification Programme.
Under the Prime Minister’s Development Scheme, the J&K government has already installed 3,000 solar street lights and 17,013 more devices will be installed after locating the proper areas. The minister said that the aforementioned scheme provides 70% subsidy to domestic users and 60% to government departments for installing solar rooftop systems.
The J&K government is reportedly distributing solar indoor lighting devices for households, which will be followed by providing solar rooftop power plants in district hospitals across the state. Apart from these, the installation of solar lights on rooftops of government buildings and other large buildings is also under consideration. Once implemented, these installations may reduce the electricity bills by approximately 60%.
Sajad Gani also stated that the Jammu & Kashmir Energy Development Agency has planned to install 54MW solar rooftop power plants during FY2018-19. The Union Ministry of New & Renewable Energy has approved the idea of setting up a 100MW solar energy park for the state and the tariff-based bidding would be soon initiated for the expansion of mega-solar projects.
