Solar power seems to be approaching the tipping point to become a mainstream energy source in India. The Ministry of Civil Aviation has plans to generate 146MW of solar power at various airports across India. A ministerial meeting issued this statement while reviewing the progress of energy and water conservation measures at AAI’s (Airports Authority of India) airports.
Cochin International Airport was the first airport in the world to become completely solar powered. After the success in Kochi, other airports in India have followed suit and have adopted solar power in a big way to augment their energy needs. Today, AAI has installed solar power plants at 16 airports with a total capacity of 5.4MW. These power plants have generated 5.1 million units till now, leading to a reduction of 4,600MT in carbon emissions. By December 2016, the ministry intends to install 24.1MW of solar power plants at 11 more airports.
