Isha Foundation launches Rally For Rivers

Isha Foundation, a spiritual organization has launched Rally For Rivers, a nationwide campaign to raise public awareness on the need to conserve water and protect rivers in India. Starting on 3 September 2017, the month-long campaign that will go from Kanyakumari to Himalayas will be led by renowned spiritual guru Sadhguru Jaggi Vasudev, who is supported by over hundreds volunteers, celebrities, government officials and corporate companies.

In the last few decades, rivers in India have undergone a drastic change due to rising population and development. Many of the rivers have already vanished and some of them die out once the rainy season is over. In contrast, the flowing rivers are so heavily polluted that they are unfit for any kind of human consumption.

To ensure that the rivers are fed by moisture throughout the year, this environmental campaign plans to maintain a tree cover for at least one kilometer on either side of the entire river length and of about half a kilometer for tributaries. Forest trees will be planted on government land and fruit trees on private land of farmers.

The Rally For Rivers will be flagged off on 3 September in Coimbatore and will pass 13 states and 22 cities across India and culminate on 2 October in Delhi. Over 21 events are expected to be conducted in major cities. Citizens who are concerned about the sad state of India’s rivers can participate by giving a missed call to 8000980009.

So let us cleanup rivers/lakes/ponds and their banks and plant a tree this week.
