The New Delhi World Book Fair 2018 is back at Pragati Maidan in the nation’s capital with a theme on ‘Environment and Climate Change’. Based on this theme, books on various environmental issues such as global warming, climate change, waste disposal and industrial pollution have been given the prime shelf space that is usually enjoyed by popular fiction and award-winning novels.
Apart from this equality-engendering move, a theme pavilion in Hall 7E has been exclusively devoted to promote traditional eco-friendly practices. These collection of books on sale ranges from academic studies and personal narratives to children’s novels and guidance handbooks. In another move to support Indian research on environment and climate change, books in Hindi as well as Indian regional languages such as Malayalam and Bangla that focus on state-specific ecological practices have been given a special spot over books in English.
In order to truly adhere to the World Book Fair’s theme, the organizers – National Book Trust of India and Indian Trade Promotion Organization have ensured that the entire pavilion is made out of eco-friendly building material such as bamboo, cane, jute, husk and MSD boards, using eco-solvent digital prints for pamphlets and hoardings. Adding to the eco-awareness theme are the daily panel discussions and presentations on solutions such as waste-management and respect for the environment.
A special effort has been made for making the pavilion fun for kids by installing rotating globes and running miniature wind-mills as a part of the exhibition that displays traditional Indian ecological innovations. Further, the hall 7E is only a small part of the larger World Book Fair that has been organized around the theme of environment and climate change but includes a plethora of other genres for all types of bibliophiles. The World Book Fair is on from 6th to 14th January 2018 and tickets for are available at all the 47 metro stations in and around Delhi and also at the venue, Pragati Maidan.
