Aaranyak, a wildlife NGO based in Northeast India, hosted a journalism training workshop named ‘Understanding biodiversity & Environmental Issues for Better Reportage’ in Guwahati on 6th and 7th March 2020. This unique event was organized at the Assam School of Journalism and Pygmy Hog Research & Breeding Centre, Guwahati, with an aim to promote environmental journalism and help students understand environmental and biodiversity issues in a better manner.

Students studying their master’s degree in Mass Communication & Journalism participated in the third installment in a series of training workshops initiated by the media production & communications division of Aaranyak. The first day of training introduced the students to biodiversity conservation in urban areas and the media’s role in promoting it.

Sushanta Talukdar, Chief Editor of NEzine.com spoke on effective approaches to reporting environmental issues with a special emphasis on multimedia storytelling through digital platforms. On the second day, students got field experience with a trip to Pygmy Hog Research & Breeding Centre and basic orientation on the significance of biodiversity. Along with Aaranyak team, a total number of 22 students participated in the event.

India along with the world is inching towards a climate crisis and natural calamities like the Australian forest fires, Cyclone Fani in Orissa, etc. are on the rise. In times like these, the need for environmental journalism is more acute now than ever, opined Bobby Magill, the president of the Society of Environmental Journalists. Endeavors like these workshops are an important step in making India ecologically aware and promoting extensive environmental news coverage.
