Social innovations in India are in for a bonanza! A National Contest on Social Innovation for identifying the 25 best socially relevant and scalable innovations is being organized as part of the Pravasi Bhartiya Divas 2017. The Pravasi Bharatiya Divas will be organized in Bangalore from 7 January 2017, which is celebrated every year to mark the contribution of Overseas Indian community to the country’s development.

The Ministry of External Affairs and NITI Aayog’s Atal Innovation Mission have jointly invited applications from social innovators and non-profit organizations for participating in the National Contest on Social Innovation. The objective of the contest is to identify a pool of social impact innovators who have developed commercially viable solutions that solve the socio-economic problems of India. This would facilitate the creation of a community of innovators, entrepreneurs, investors, grant bodies, and mentors for commercialization and scale up.

The key focus sectors for the National Contest on Social Innovation include – cleantech, education, health, housing, public transport, skill development and livelihood, waste management, water and sanitation. Innovative products or technologies that are based on tangible scientific discoveries or a novel application of an existing technology and are scalable enough to deliver mass impact at the grassroots level will be considered. The 25 best innovative start-ups with a social impact will be showcased to NRI investors participating in the event through an exhibition.
