Biodiesel is back in the news again with the country’s first bus being introduced that runs on 100% biodiesel. Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) has introduced its ‘biobus’ on the Bengaluru-Chennai route, which operates only on fuel obtained from plant-based non-edible oils. This pilot project runs on a Scania luxury bus under its ‘Airavat Diamond Class’. Based on the success of this pilot project, KSRTC plans to extend it to its massive fleet of 17,000 buses.

Earlier, KSRTC had regularly used 10-20% blends of biodiesel on local buses in Bengaluru. Currently the biodiesel used in this new experiment costs INR5 less than the conventional petro-diesel. Apart from less pollution, savings on fuel can help increase the revenue for the state-owned transport company. KSRTC currently consumes 2.1 lakh kiloliters of diesel every year.
