Well known green entrepreneur Rhea Mazumdar Singhal, who pioneered the Ecoware food packaging material in India, received the Nari Shakti Puraskar Award recently. Nari Shakti Puraskar (Woman Strength Award) is India’s highest civilian award given every year on the International Women’s Day for recognizing the achievements of women in the country.

On 8 March 2019, Rhea Mazumdar received the award from the President of India Shri Ram Nath Kovind at the Rashtrapati Bhavan in New Delhi. Around 1,000 nominations were received this year, of which 44 were selected for different award categories. Among the awardees are scientists, entrepreneurs, environmentalists, farmers, artists, journalists and many other women who have faced their own unique challenges, but have remained undeterred to achieve their dream.

Ecoware’s Rhea was chosen for pioneering the sustainable food packaging industry in India. Never before had anyone offered a local, easily scalable and affordable solution to single-use plastics. Rhea built grassroots level awareness against the harmful effects of plastic packaging, not just on our environment, but on our health too. Rhea stated she received this award on behalf of all stakeholders of Ecoware, whose loyalty is a validation of a little experiment we started some years ago.
