Bengaluru-based nature conservation community Cafe Oikos is playing host to an interesting talk show titled “What’s that racket? Linguistics of the bird world” on 28 April 2018 at Urban Solace – Cafe for the Soul, Bangalore. This event is part of Cafe Oikos community’s series of talk shows on ecology and conservation biology.

Samira Agnihotri, a friendly neighborhood ecologist, will give an introduction to the study of bird song and then focus on a very special type of vocal communication – birds that mimic others. Samira has a master’s degree in wildlife biology and conservation from the National Centre for Biological Sciences. This gave her the chance to step into the realm of birdsong, and nothing makes her more contented than walking a forest with a mike and recorder.

After obtaining her Ph.D. from the Indian Institute of Science, Samira Agnihotri has worked in the Biligiri Rangan Hills since 2005. She is currently finishing her post-doctoral studies at the National Institute of Advanced Studies. Samira is also interested in conservation education, and in exploring different ways to popularize the ecological sciences as well as encourage and aid in the preservation of traditional knowledge systems, especially those of the Soliga tribes of BR Hills.
